BERLIN:  Violeta Urmana has enjoyed great acclaim on stages around the world for her readings of the great soprano roles in Verdi’s operas, such as Amelia in Un ballo in maschera, Leonora in La forza del destino, Elisabetta in Don Carlos and Aida, and now she returns to a role with which she enjoyed similar fame before she changed from mezzo to soprano: Eboli in Don Carlos.

The German magazine Das Opernglas wrote of her reading of this role at the Vienna State Opera: “Violeta Urmana as Eboli was something else. It has been a long time since a singer has given both arias, the song of the veil with its coloratura embellishments and ‘O don fatale’, with such authority. She combined fundamental expressive impact with an unbelievably disciplined treatment of the musical line. No transition in register marred her singing; Violeta Urmana’s well focussed voice shone at every level in the most brilliant of colours.”

Eboli was originally one of the Lithuanian singer’s star roles in which she was able to demonstrate her dramatic fire and finely honed vocal skill.

Returning to a role that helped secure her fame in earlier years, she can today combine the warm, deep tones of her mezzo past with the clear, high notes of her more recent soprano roles.
In the coming autumn Violeta Urmana will play Eboli at the Vienna State Opera under Franz Welser-Möst, and at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin under Donald Runnicles

. Her partners in Vienna are Ramón Vargas, Ferruccio Furlanetto and Anja Harteros, and in Berlin they are Russell Thomas, Hans-Peter König and once again Anja Harteros, who is alternating in the role of Elisabetta with Barbara Frittoli.

As the Verdi bicentennial year draws to a close, this means that Violeta Urmana is reviving a role created by one of her favourite composers, and one which brought her early fame to which she brings new lustre.
