Jonas Kaufman is again presenting a new CD, this time with Verismo arias on Decca. Together with the Orchester and choir from Academia di Santa Cecilia in Roma, conducted by the outstanding Antonio Pappano.

In this connection Jonas Kaufmann explaines by himself:

Verismo Arias

Which tenor does not dream of one day making the big “hits” from the era of verismo, singing rousing songs like clown! “Ridi” ” Laugh” from Pagliaccio by Leoncavallo, or Turriddus farewell to the mother from Pietro Mascagnis “Cavalleria Rusticana”. I remember I thought how as a student: Man, this must be great to sing these things! experiences of last season it was beautiful: took place. Francesco Cilea’s “Adriana Lecouvreur”, premiered in Milan in 1902, comes from the era of verismo, but is a special case, first by the anachronistic choice of historical subjects, but above all as “convincing synthesis of speech and musical theater.

The recording sessions for my album verismo, in May 2010 took place in Rome. With Antonio Pappano and the Orchester and choir from Academia di Santa Cecilia in Roma , the project was blessed with good fortune: we found it a moment as “hard work” but always a pleasure.

My personal favorite on this album is a Largely unknown piece: the application of the dead Romeo Juliet at the opera version of Riccardo Zandonai. In fact, I wanted this album alongside popular ‘war horses “like the monologues of Andrea Chenier and” Cielo e mar “from” La Gioconda “, by Giordano, some rarities offer, including arias from the “other Bohème” by Ruggero Leoncavallo, and completely forgotten from the opera “I Lituanie” by Amilcare Ponchielli.
“Ombra di nube” by Licinio Reffinicie but is no aria, but a song, but I found the inclusion of the verismo diva Claudia Muzio so moving that I really wanted to record the piece. As a “closer” I have the famous, wonderfully rousing final duet from Umberto Giordiano´s “Andrea Chenier”. The part of Maddalenas is sung by Mrs Eva-Maria Westbroek with which i hopefully will have more the joint appearances even more fun. by Jonas Kaufmann.

This CD is absolutely wonderful, and it is also bringing us in to the world of some arias, which is not so well known to the audience, and therefore giving us all new experiences, beaty, and new knowledge of great arias from the world of opera.

“Meinen die wirklich mich”

“Is that really me?”

Certainly much too early, I said, when the first request was for a book. But it should not be a memoir, I was assured, but in actual artist’s portrait in book Form. Fair enough. But how should this portrait, and who should make it? To write a self-portrait, but I did not have the time. Moreover, this form would have been too one-sided. I needed a Competent and trusted author, and in our cooperation for the movie “Accidental Hero” Thomas Voigt Seemed the right one. The first call was clear concept, showing what the whole thing could just not a traditional biography, but a large, thematically structured interview, interspersed with biographical sections and contributions from colleagues, conductors, theater professionals and journalists.
I hope that this mix, the taste, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have contributed to the success of the book, especially my teacher, Michael Rhodes and the “guest authors”: Angela Gheorghiu, Natalie Dessay, Christa Ludwig, Gabriele Strehle, Antonio Pappano, Franz Welser-Möst, Alexander Pereira, Peter Gelb, Jürgen Kesting – and Plácido Domingo, who wrote the foreword.
The title “Do the really me?” Refers to my reaction on first solo curtain at the Met is one of the memorable moments of my life, and so is the Met debut marks the beginning of the book.
