CANNES/FRANCE: The unique group of all male ballerinas hit Cannes on Palm Sunday, rocking the distinguished Palais des Festivals. They captured the enthusiastic audience with the style they have long cultivated and with dancers on the highest virtuoso and artistic level.

Petipa
In an age where contemporary ballett has found new techniques, body language and costumes, the Trocks take care of the classical ballet and bring us back to the time of Petipa and Tchaikowsky. The white skirts and the shoes for the demanding toe dance are as they were hundred and fifty years ago. The choreographies are based directly on the old masters like Petipa and Ivanov, and the audience gets all the beauty and glory of old times. It is much more than a drag show.

Trockadero was a gay night club in New York, and referring to the Diaghilev tradition of Monte Carlo always gives credit. The style was more informal in the beginnng, and the company started as a short time late night project. But it took off, and through more than forty years they have developed a highly professional style, being The World’s Foremost All-Male Comic Ballet Company.

Chaplin
In the classical choreographies they exploit all the possibilities of showing the comic and pathetic elements inherent, and there certainly are a lot of these. But there is a very conscious control that prevents exaggeration in using elements worthy of Chaplin and other silent movie pioneers.
The men, some with hair under their arms, portray the female ballerinas so convincingly that the man/woman issue disappears. This is a stunning illusion of classical ballet with ballerinas at its best – and improved with just the right portion of entertaining humour.
