STARCAST in LA BOHEME at BASTILLE

My last La Bohème in Paris was at Palais Garnier in the 1980´ with Luciano Pavarotti and Ileana Cotrubas as stars in each their cast, a wonderful experience
. This was in the old Gian Carlo Menotti production, which was going at Opera National de France until 1986.

This new La Bohème at Opera Bastille started in 1995, good regi by Jonathan Miller, which don’t need to put in effects to get it going
. He is in his staging following the original traditional story, don’t need to let the singers run around on the stage just to make action
. This is trustfull opera, where there is a meaning behind the movements. I like it very much. The history is mowed forward to around 1920-1930. It suits this history well, and is not spoiling anything of the romantic story. Still we are getting bicycles on stage. Dante Ferrettis scenography is updated in a good way; The Momus scene is giving a great feeling of the Momus Café, and its surroundings. The big windows in the café are giving fantastic possibilities to play on several niveau at the same time. Gabriella Pescucci is responsible for the costumes from the period and Guido Levi for light design

Daniel Oren is conducting it all, he has exactly the right feeling, which gives the singers enough time to sound out, and are not to slow, so he is not delaying the performance at all. The orchestra, the choir and children’s choir is sounding wonderful.

. Pascal Meslé was bicycling and singing Parpignol. This cast is outstanding singers with voices who is good to this production at Bastille Opera. I do understand well that The National Opera of Paris is filling up the big house at every La Bohéme evening. However Opera Bastille is for me to big a house for La Bohéme, and it was it too for the Robert Wilson Madame Butterfly in 2007 (?). I am sitting and missing the intimate atmosphere in these Giacomo Puccini operas. For me Turandot is the only Puccini opera suitable for such a large stage. This kind of verism is being more beautiful and near, when you are getting it in a smaller, more intimate room
. But of course, it is good for opera that it is reaching out to so large audiences as at Bastille Opera. And people loved it.

To fill up the room and coop with this big orchestra, it demands singers with very big voices, and it has it at this opera house, no problem. But during the way I was sitting and thinking that the singing, sounds like Wagner, not like Puccini.
