BRUXELLES: When Claude Debussy bed for the first time the play by Maurice Maeterlinck’s Pelléas et Mélisande, the work of the great Belgian author perfectly meets the desires of the musician who then seeks to compose a work not related to any other, without any constraint historical or classical scheme, “any time, any place” to use his own words. . Founded in September 2008, this production was the first collaboration between these two great artists and won all the votes of the press and the public. For this occasion, the permanent conductor Ludovic Morlot of the Mint, in this long-awaited first opera on our stage, directs Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of La Monnaie.

The scenery here is based on the taste of Anish Kapoor sculptures architected for large who suggested this great unique scenery, huge matrix in which the drama unfolds, both stationary object nevertheless traveled underground movements, like play Pelléas. The work is enhanced by the play of lights and costumes Jean Kalman, Patrick Kinmonth who come to make their share of mystery and originality.

 

Three main roles in this magical production of Pelléas, Mélisande and Golaud   Mint offers two exceptional distributions, the original distribution with Stéphane Degout, Sandrine Piau and Dietrich Henschel and a whole newcast with Yann Beuron *, Monica Bacelli * and Paul Gay *. There will be a version with soprano and baritone, and a version with mezzo-soprano and tenor.

The French baritone Stéphane Degout debuted in the role of Pelléas in 2008 in the same production. He is an artist regularly applauded at the Mint. He is currently on our stage for the creation of the role of the Prince in the last operaMernier Benedict, La Dispute. French tenor Yann Beuron * began at the Mint in L ‘Orfeo in 1998 and participated inLa Cenerentola in 2000. The role of Pelléas has already taken on the stages of Duisburg, Madrid and Barcelona.

We could hear the French soprano Sandrine Piau at different times in the Mint, and in particular for his debut in the role of Mélisande and the title role in Theodora in March 2012. Italian mezzo-soprano Monica Bacelli * is not a stranger to Mint since participated in productions of La Calisto, Die Zauberflöte, Le Nozze di Figaro and Giulio Cesare inEgitto, before returning to sing the role of Mélisande.

Very present on our stage, baritone Dietrich Henschel there was until recently his debut in the role of Dr. Schön and Jack the ripper for our new production of Lulu presented in November 2012. We found the French bass-baritone Paul Gay * in the creation of Yvonne, Princess of Burgundy Philippe Boesmans in 2010 before hearing this season LucreziaBorgia and the concert version of Romeo and Juliet.

The interpreter’s role Geneviève, the French mezzo-soprano Sylvie Brunet-Grupposo, debuted at the Mint in the new production of Il trovatore in June 2012 in a critically acclaimed role.

Norwegian Frode Olsen bass will be interpreted to Arkel alternating with the baryton French Jérôme Varnier *. The Belgian bass Patrick Bolleire interpret the Doctor. The French baritone Alexandre Duhamel will play the Shepherd, after making his debut at La Monnaie in the role of Count Paris for the concert version of Romeo and Juliet.French soprano Valerie Gabail began at the Mint and the role Yniold in this same production of Pelléas et Mélisande in 2008.
