BÆRUM/NORWAY: Norwegian Chamber Orchestre was lead by the outstanding Norwegian violinist Øivind Bjorå, who also is concertmaster of The Norwegian Opera Orchestre.
The inspiring numbers for the clarinet soloist with orchestre, were Preludes de dance for clarinet og orkester, a demanding work in 5 pieces. Martin Frøst elegantly forming of these five pieces by Witold Lutoslawsky was brilliant, nearly like in a chamber music way. In good cooperation with the soloists in many parts of the orchestra, how the clarinet solist. It is extraordinary to listen to how elegantly Marin Frøst is building up his tunes from the nearly not hearbar pianissimo, starting from O contrasting hold back to the marcant march rhytmic part in the orchestra, which gives extraordinary effects.
In the Concerto for clarinet and orchestra by Aaron Copland we heard an other kind of composer, with another kind of musical mood. Copland sounds to me to be an ideal composer for Martin Frøst´s expressive talent, as this melodic mood, but still on an extraordinary way, and not sounding like any European composer. Wonderful cadenza with 1000 different variations of how to form the tunes from a clarinet, even with swinging and jazz inspired moods, gave us an extraordinary feeling. I can´t remember when I have heard such an inspiring and musically clarinet soloist.
As opening of the second part the orchestra played one of their hits Holberg Suite by Edvard Grieg, who has been the hallmark of Norwegian Chamber Orchestre, a piece they plays brilliantly, with energy – and passion.
A very good evening. Which could have been broadcasted in the radio and tv. It would renew and tell that also in Norway there are such splendid concertevenings, not only showing the programs from abroad.
