COPENHAGEN/DENMARK: Painting the Danish Queen was, in every way, a fantastic and monumental experience

. – the painter Mikael Melbye tells – She was gracious and easy to work with and we had a wonderful time together. It took me five months to complete….8 hours a day, seven days a week. But it was worth it.

The Queen asked that it be used as her jubilee stamp and it was printed in the millions and the first edition was sold out in three days
. It was one of the largest stamps in the history of Denmark, and it was the last ever to be printed here
.

The portrait measures 240 cm X 170 cm and is hanging in the Royal reception rooms at The Christiansborg Castle where also the Danish Parliament is. I’m told it is seen by around 126.000 people each year, so I cannot ask for a better placement…….funny to be a part of history in that way
