BEIJING/CHINA: There was tumultuous applause for Die Walküre, by Richard Wagner, which the Beijing Music Festival is showing in a coproduction with the Salzburg Easter Festival. At its opening performance yesterday, 24 October, the Walküre  was greeted with enthusiastic cheers from the 1,300-strong audience in the sold-out Poly Theatre in Beijing.

The Salzburg sets have been adjusted to suit the dimensions of the Poly Theatre, whose stage is smaller than that of the Grosses Festspielhaus; thus the ellipse in the second and third acts has been rescaled.

The cast was in part the same as in Salzburg, but there were new faces too
. Michaela Kaune, who deputised as Sieglinde in the Salzburg production, gave an equally convincing, highly expressive performance here, especially in tandem with her new Siegmund, Stuart Skelton. Andrii Goniukov as Hunding adapted perfectly to this production, which was supervised on the spot by its director Vera Nemirova. And Vitalij Kowaljow, who enjoyed great success in Salzburg, again offered a powerfully eloquent interpretation of Wotan, both vocally and dramatically
.

The production had both a new Brünnhilde in Christiane Libor, and a new Fricka, sung by Mihoko Fujimura. Five of the eight Valkyries had already sung in Salzburg. The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra played under the baton of Jaap van Zweden.
