Breath taking GHOSTS in Oslo

Breath taking GHOSTS in Oslo

Review by Henning Høholt.

OSLO/NORWAY: GHOSTS with the Norwegian National Ballet is back on stage inOS Oslo, before it shall tour to Vienna primo March. It is based on Henrik Ibsens famouse tragic history – Gengangere, that the register Marit Modum Aune and the choreographer Cina Espejord to music by Nils Petter Molvær, who also are present on stage as trompet soloist
. In the leading roles there are two cast, at the repremiere, we met Andreas Heise, Camilla Spidsøe, Ole Willy Falkhaugen, Yoshifumi Inao and Grete Sofie Borud Nybakken.

It has been a very touching history, with a danced vitalization of the text, which has been beautiful and very well formed
. After the premiere in 2014 in the Operahouse in Oslo, its  scenography,  by help of the great technically arrangements at the house, is getting a scenographically moving history, which helps the history, with its many complicated details to be be well understood.

Thank to the brilliant dancers every little detail in the choreography is getting out to all corners of the hall, however, some details and the mimic i am afraid are being lost, when you are sitting very far
. However, the history is being well told. I would recommend that the audience is reading the history in advance, it would help them to get even more out of the story

Camilla Spidsøe and Andreas Heise in a beautiful lift.

Sonia Vinograd as young mrs. Alving and Andreas Heise in a beautiful lift.

The music by Nils Petter Molvær is giving a good background for the history, and his own participating on stage live with good trompet solo parts sounds and looks good.

In the many roles we enjoyed very much the leading contemporary ballerina in the Norwegian national ballet, Camilla Spidsøe, she has all what is needed for this demanding roles, both in the demanding movements that Cina Espejord has given to her role, and by her expression and stagepresence.

Closely followed up by Andreas Heise as Osvald/Kaptein Alving, who does a strong job in this demanding double role. Ole Willy Falkhaugen is perfect as Manders, and in the demanding role as Engstrand we enjoy the powerful Yoshifumi Inao. Grete Sofie Borud Nybakken forms Regines role excellent.

We too enjoyed the two children in the piece Kristoffer Ask Haglund as Oswald as child and Erle Østraat as Regine as child. Furthermore a good job from Philip Currell as the young Manders and Sonia Vinograd as young Mrs. Alving.

It is an excellent initiative from the Nationalballet to present this famous Henrik Ibsen piece in such a great visual way, and it is specially good to notice that it too can be an export product, right together with Alexander Ekmans A Swan Lake, and Liam Scarletts Carmen as a ballet.
