REMBRANDT and BOL

To day we want to make a small focus to a group paintings by two famous painters from the  Netherlands.  The famous painter Rembrandt and one of his pupils Bol, starting with Bol:

Ferdinand Bol (1616-1680):

The group portrait is a special form of Dutch portrait painting. It is always used to depict those in official positions who executes their duties together while emphasizing the equal status and individuality of those portrayed. Apart from officers in the schutterij or civic guard, those in official positions in both charitable organizations and guilds also had their portraits painted. In 1659, Bol, who was a pupil of Rembrandt, painted the portrait of the governors of the Amsterdam wine merchants guild
. The pipette and tastevin in the servant´s hand are indication of their profession.

This painting was bought to the Altes Pinakotek in 1930 from an art gallery.

Rembrandt (Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn) 1606-1669):

The Resurrected Christ, 1661

The Resurrected Christ

With this late work, Rembrandt created a particularly haunting and moving painting of Christ after he had risen from dead. Without showing the marks of the passion and crucifixion, and illuminated by a barely perceivable help, the life sized figure of Christ boldly faces the the viewer who becomes the direct recipient of the message that the resurrection promise redemption.

This painting comes from the Aschaffenburg Castle. – Aschaffenburg is a town in northwest Bavaria, Germany.

Rembrandt (Rembrandt Harmensz
. van Rijn) 1606-1669):

The Sacrifice of Isaac, 1636

The Sacrifice of Isaac

To test the steadfastness of his faith, God asked Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac. Only at the very last moment did an angel prevent him from being fulfilled. The picture´s composition that captures the drama of the story in the Old Testament came from Rembrandt, the painting itself however was executed by a master pupil and later corrected by Rembrandt- «Rembrandt verandert En over geschildert» (Altered and overpainted by Rembrandt) the inscription reads at the bottom edge of the painting.

This painting comes from Mannheim Castle.

Rembrandt (Rembrandt Harmensz

Paintings of individual figures in Holland in the seventeenth century that were neither portraits nor history paintings are called trines (heads, faces, grimaces). The emphasis is on the virtuoso depiction of exotic characterizes the various textiles and metallic surfaces. Such are the lengths of cloth wound into the turban, captures in just a few long, fluid brushstrokes that thicken to form a pastose relief above the temples.

This self-portrait of the twenty-three-year-old artist painted in Leiden, belongs to a seres of head studies (Dutch: trines) in which rembrandt experimented with light and shadow, facial expressions and physiognomy, as well as various painting techniques such as scratching of hair into the still-wet paint.
