ALBERT HERRING IN COPENHAGEN
Albert Herring to his mother:
“You have suppressed me, kept me in check, held my instincts down with safety pins. You have wrapped me in cotton wool, measured my life after a ruler and overprotected me so intensely that my only recourse was a wild explosion.”
Appearances are maintained in the small English village of Loxford, although nothing is as it appears if you scratch below the surface
. So the local kingpins decide to award a prize to the only decent young man in town, Albert Herring. But being hailed as a paragon does not sit well with Albert, who puts the prize to a somewhat different use than originally intended.
As with many of Britten’s operas, Albert Herring deals with the experience of standing out from the crowd – in this case with added light-hearted humour. Gert Henning-Jensen performs the title role as the well-groomed young man who comes of age overnight.
