BARCELONA/SPAIN: The Executive Committee of the Fundació Gran Teatre del Liceu convened last Thursday morning to approve the extension of Maestro Josep Pons’s contract as music director of the Fundació Gran Teatre del Liceu for the next four seasons.

The current contract, which was set to expire after the 2017-18 season with the possibility of extension until 2019-20, has actually been extended until the 2021-22 season in order to give continuity to the Liceu’s Music Plan. “I thank the Liceu for the chance to finish the work that we have been doing,” Pons said. “My time at the Liceu has no other purpose than to leave our audiences and our country with the legacy of the best possible Orchestra and Chorus”.

Since becoming the Liceu’s music director in September 2012, Josep Pons has been in charge of designing and implementing the Music Plan to enhance the Liceu Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. He has achieved great results thus far.

The performances of Götterdämmerung and Benvenuto Cellini in the 2015-16 season, where the first stirrings of excellence could be seen, were followed by Elektra and Don Giovanni in 2016-17. This November, his efforts won further acclaim for Prokofiev’s music in the ballet Romeo and Juliet, “an orchestra that sounded brilliant and generous” wrote El Punt Avui.

The support of audiences and especially of critics has placed special importance on Pons’ “impeccable work, drawing a spectacular sound out of the Liceu Symphony” wrote the newspaper ABC in December 2016. El Mundo praised the results of the Music Plan, writing that Josep Pons’ work with the Liceu Orchestra in recent years continues to be colossal”.

The Liceu wants to give continuity to this enhancement of its Orchestra and to ensure the improvement of its Chorus as well. Under the leadership of Conxita Garcia, who was appointed in October 2015, the Chorus achieved visible success with Un ballo in maschera: “Bravo to the VEUS-Amics de la Unió Children’s Choir, and especially the Liceu Men’s Chorus, for their magnificent sound control thanks to the tireless work of Conxita Garcia” wrote La Vanguardia’s opera critic. Last season, the Chorus also shined with Rigoletto and Il trovatore. “The Liceu Chorus has done it again under Conxita Garcia, rounding off an excellent season for the hosts of the house”, wrote La Vanguardia in July. El País also praised the Chorus for its “great scenes with brave singing and rich tones of Verdi”.

This new contract reaffirms the mutual commitment between the Gran Teatre del Liceu and Josep Pons at a very important time for the Liceu Symphony Orchestra, which will perform the Concert for Peace and Human Rights in the United Nations Office at Geneva on 9 December. Moreover,Tristan und Isolde will debut on 28 November, a musical tour de force for the director and musicians alike as they take on “Wagner’s most chamber music-friendly opera”.
