VIENNA/AUSTRIA: The Norwegian conductor Eivind Gullberg Jensen is making his debut at the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera), with the opera “Tosca” by Giacomo Puccini, starring two of the biggest opera stars of our time, Jonas Kaufmann and Angela Gheorghiu. The premiere will take place on 5 May 2017. According to our research, Eivind Gullberg Jensen will be the first Norwegian conductor to perform at the Vienna State Opera in 150 years of existence of this famous theatre. He will be leading the Wiener Philharmoniker, the renowned orchestra that plays the popular New Year’s Concerts in Vienna

In 2010 Eivind Gullberg Jensen hit the headlines in the Norwegian press, when he made his debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker as the first Norwegian in more than 50 years. As the sixth Norwegian to conduct this famous orchestra he succeeded Edvard Grieg, Johan Svendsen, Olav Kielland, Odd Grüner-Hegge and Øivind Fjeldstad. We have not yet been able to trace a mentioning of a Norwegian conductor in the archives of the Wiener State Opera and the Wiener Philharmoniker. A possible reason may be that the opera has less tradition in Norway. The fact that Norwegian is a not existing language in the world of opera makes it even more difficult to build a career within this field. (For various reasons, Norway has failed to produce many conductors with international careers, on the contrary to Finland.)

Eivind Gullberg Jensen studied primarily in Stockholm and later in Vienna:

He has performed regularly in Scandinavia, with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Den Norske Opera & Ballett, the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra to name but a few.

His career started in central Europe, where he has worked regularly with orchestras like Münchner Philharmoniker, Orchestre de Paris, Philharmonia of London and Zurich Opera.

At the “Bergen Festspillene” he has given two guest performances with the NDR Radiophilharmonie of Hanover (Germany) where he was chief conductor from 2009-2014.
