PETER PAN – in France
PETER PAN – in France
Les Ballets de France: a promising company presenting Peter Pan, choreography by Michael Pink
By Christophe de Jouvancourt.
PARIS/FRANCE: Les Ballets de France is a young but very promising company founded in 2014 by Rémi Lartigue. After a lightning career at the Milwaukee Ballet and the Florida Ballet, Lartigue came back in France in 2014 to create his company, at only 21 years old. Passionate, Lartigue is willing to share his love of dance and Ballet with the largest audience and make this art more accessible to neophytes by offering popular but highly demanding shows.
Rémi Lartigue always ambitioned big productions and wanted to adapt in France Michael Pink’s Peter Pan, ballet that he danced when he was at the Milwaukee Ballet.
This 2h30 long ballet for 30 dancers was a real challenge for the young company director, who convinced great partners to follow him and realize this wonderful project.
Make dancers fly isn’t as easy as it seems and Tinker Bell’s fairy dust wasn’t such a great help!
The extremely precise scenery needs no less than 20 machinists and technicians.
Three years of work were necessary to achieve this challenge and now the ballet is finally ready to be presented to the audience.
This shows the high level of expectations that Rémi Lartigue puts in his company’s productions.
The program seems really attractive and of the highest quality. Especially as Rémi Lartigue invited renowned dancers to play the main parts. Medhi Angot, brilliant dancer, soloist with the Ballet of Nice (France) under the direction of Eric Vu-An, is dancing Peter Pan, and the Captain Hook is danced by Mihai Mezei, Principal of the National Ballet of Bucarest. But also, the choreographer himself, Michael Pink, is a worldly famous artist, who worked as artistic director for the Northern Ballet before being invited choreographer for the Milwaukee Ballet. In Peter Pan, as in a lot of his ballets, Pink worked with Philipp Feeney to compose the music. Lights are signed by David Grill and underline the magic of the tale highlighting the spectacular scenery by R.H.Graham and the very inspiring costumes by Judanna Lynn.
Michael Pink’s Peter Pan, such as the other ballets at the Ballets de France’s repertoire, is really settled in classical technique and demands very high skills and experience to the dancers. The company’s spirit reminds the Northern Ballet’s, famous for its narrative classical ballets among which David Nixon’s Peter Pan is quite typical; or even the Matthew Bourne’s company spirit.
Michael Pink’s Peter Pan was a huge success in the United-States and one can only wishes the same in France. The Premiere will happens on April 15th at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes and will open a tour in France, with a step by the Palais des Congrès in Paris on May 20th, and maybe then a European tour. This show, inspired by Broadway and the West End, is aimed for all audiences and generations, and deserves to get a great success.
