Following her training in contemporary dance from Trinity Laban Conservatoire for Music and Dance (BA) and Middlesex University (MA), Nilsen worked as a freelance dancer and guest teacher at Trinity Laban, Oslo National Academy of the Arts, the University of Stavanger and the Teacher Training Course at Bodø teaching academy, before she began working as a dancer in Candoco in 2000. She was appointed Artistic Co-Director of Candoco in 2007 together with Pedro Machado.
For 10 years they have developed the company into today’s well established company with 7 dancers and 11 employees. Nilsen has driven the growth of the company in one of Europe’s biggest centres for dance, in a financial climate which at times has been challenging.
The board of CODA express their enthusiasm over the opportunity to hire such an experienced and qualified manager both artistically and organizationally, and highlight her ability to engage, lead and maneuver through challenges. Nilsen’s experience of taking over the leadership of Candoco from its founder, as is the case with CODA, is also positive and relevant in this context. Nilsen is experienced in engaging co-workers towards an overarching goal, as well as building bridges and establishing solid partnerships over time. She now takes over from Lise Nordal who, along with Odd Johan Fritzøe, initiated Coda contemporary dance festival Oslo Norway in 2001. Lise Nordal has been Artistic Director of CODA since 2006 and CEO / Artistic Director since 2010.
Nilsen emphasizes approaching the job with a great deal of enthusiasm and she looks forward to further advancing CODAs position in the field of dance, contributing to continued audience development and ensuring a good reputation with funding bodies and collaborators.
