Cherkaoui and Wang with “生长genesiss” in Montpellier
“生长genesiss” by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Yabin Wang
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui in cooperation with Yabin Wang gave the audience an amazing and fascinating experience on their performance “生长genesiss”. During his building up of the “history” he is presenting us different small histories, where interesting and sometimes unexpected details are in the center. As for exemple in the opening the feeling of being at a hospital with doctors and nurses, the delicioude playing with hands, with glass balls, a fight with mosquitos.
Review by Henning Høholt
MONTPELLIER/FRANCE: The choreography of “生长genesiss” inclusive the two Chinese characters 生长 literally are meaning Birth an Growth, explores imagery of creation and evolution via the close-up at humankind´s relationship with the surrounding natural materials, the materiality of the body and emotional connections with other people.
Posing the questions: Where do we come from? How di we grow? And what happens to us after we die? These questions are importent for building up the history that the audience are getting presented for their eyes.
These are the universal metaphysical and spiritual questions, which “生长 genesiss” explores choreographically.
In this connection it is furthermore developed by the dancers and fir exempel through the beautyful solos by Yabin Wang, where she in the last one is using her very long black hair as a requisit. The different dancers are performing their specialityes in the production.
Cherkaoui creates often demanding and beautiful groups, and i am several times thinking of sculptures by the famoude french sculpturer August Rodin.
All the different parts are deliciously hanging together, where it is like the one history is a “normal” continuation of the one before. Cherkaoui is all the time working with excellent light design by Willy Cessa which underlines and focus on importent details. And during the way, are sending shadows of dancers of scenografi up on the walls. Giving the performance extra dimensions.
The large glass boxes, which is being moved around on the stage, exposing the dancers gives all the performance a special atmosphaere, and is reflecting details. Dancers: Yabin Wang, Qing Wang, Fanq Yin, Chao Li, Elias Lazaridis, Johnny Lloyd, Kazutomi “Tsuki” Kozuki.
However the music is importent for lifting the performance to such a high quality as the result has been.
It is a good combination of a specially composed work by Olga Wojciechowska, and a life part, being played on stage of a brilliant pianist Barbara “Basia” Drazkowska in one of the glass boxes on stage, a percussionist with a large variation of possibilities and two gitars, among them, the one is played by one of the dancers, Johnny Lloyd. Who also are reading texts, as the history of Adam, Eva and the Serpent, and last, but not least the one gitarist, Kaspy Kukosa Kuybulka from Ghana is singing very well, in his Ghana dialect. In addition of the dancer singing in Tibetanian language, Manjuath “Manju” B Chandramouli.
The costumes, functioning well for each of the dancers are by Quing Liu.
Scenografi by Kedong Liu.
Foundaton BNP Paribas are supporting.
